Corporal Michael David Love DSM 846 Squadron Fleet Air Arm Royal Marines 22 August 1959 ~ 19 May 1982 Age 22
Michael David Love was born on 22 August 1959 in Preston, Lancashire.
Michael was one of two boys.
Doc was posthumously awarded the DSM for his service his citation reads ‘MONDAY, 11th OCTOBER 1982.
The QUEEN has been graciously pleased to approve the Posthumous award of the Distinguished Service Medal to the undermentioned in recognition of gallant and distinguished service during the operations in the South Atlantic:
Acting Corporal Aircrewman Michael David LOVE, Royal Marines, P035079S
Corporal Love, 846 Naval Air Squadron, completed seven operational sorties in very hazardous conditions. He played a vital part in the success of these missions and displayed remarkable skill, bravery and resilience during periods of intense activity. Sadly, he was later killed in a flying accident but his great contribution to the success of the Squadron’s operations will always remain a source of inspiration.’
In Doc’s memory 848 Naval Air Squadron at RNAS Yeovilton present the ‘Doc Love Trophy’ to the best aircrewman on course.
In 2022 as part of the Falkland Islands 40th Anniversary Place Names Project Doc was honoured with Love Point, headland off Strike Off Point on the south shore of Berkeley Sound, East Falkland.
